Surfing the web with Marshall McLuhan
Happenstance or coincidence for the third day in a row I have found myself talking to somebody about this page from the medium is the massage. The contrast between the businessman and all the establishment ideas he stands for and the anti-establishment act of surfing is great. But I was wondering what had happened to the idea of ‘surfing the web’. Its not a phrase you hear that much these days. Is it that we now all search, has google ruined the serendipity of the web, how do you accidentally come across things now?
Apparently McLuhan was also responsible in part for the use of the ‘surfing’ metaphor,”Heidegger surf-boards along on the electronic wave as triumphantly as Descartes rode the mechanical wave.”
