Recently I have been thinking about those illustrated ladybird books, and I have also treated myself to the an anthology of Eagle cutaways. I am too young to have seen the originals but they hold an amazing position at a moment when people felt technology and its development should be easily understood. Anyway now they just seem quaint.
But it was whilst recently watching a Royksopp – Remind me video (which won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for best music video) that I realised that I actually do think rain is caused by comic book waves with a yellow ball shinning on them causing white lines to rise into the sky and form clouds. Because you can’t actually see the process the infographics become real.
Google maps on a mobile phone mean that wherever I go a map view and/or arial view is as valid as the street around me. Finally being a Londoner I get around using the underground. So I know that if you are travelling from Victoria to East Putney you turn left at Earls Court to go down the Wimbledon branch of the district line. I literally understand and in some way believe Putney is a right angle away from Victoria. Because the great graphic design of the underground map make it easier to understand.
When my google goggles arrive I’m sure it’ll all go fight club.
