Levels of Design

Diagram showing the macro, meso, micro levels of design

Working across Macro, Meso and Micro

Projects can be understood across three levels: Macro, Meso, and Micro. Most service design activity sits within the macro and meso levels, where the service is defined and structured.

Currencies Direct became Redpin, shifting strategy to focus on payments and embedded software for the residential property market.

Macro: Problem Space (Discover)
Focus on the big picture. Navigate ambiguity through stakeholder interviews and market research. The question is whether the product should exist.

Meso: Solution Space (Define and Develop)
Once defined, move to the middle range. Translate opportunities into user journeys and flows by moving between abstract and concrete design.

Micro: Execution Space (Deliver, Test, Refine)
Focus on detail. Turn user flows into prototypes and high-fidelity designs, testing and refining before development.
