I did Alice in Wonderland for my eldest daughters Year Six production and this year was lucky enough to do The Lion King for my youngest. St Jude’s were amazing and despite all the extra difficulties of COVID the school decided to go ahead with the end of year school play. Miss McLeash wrote an adaptation of the Lion King, and I got busy with papier-mâché and acrylic paints.

Having researched lots of different approaches, I settled on a simple design, of 10mm bent wire frames to support 18mm birch plywood shelves. The idea being to line a bedroom wall with shelves to hold momentos and knick knacks and possibly a few books.
Continue reading Wire Frame shelvesI have alway tried not to have my photo on the internet, and so have over the years experimented with various styles of illustration for my ‘profile’ image which is often required when you register to a site. It is also fun to do.
Experimenting with decorative wall planters I made one covered in twisted curly clay tendrils. The curls are glazed with warm cadmium yellows, oranges and reds. Its planted with the snake plant, or mother-in-laws tongue, Sansevieria trifasciata. Made it to go outside my youngest daughter’s room.
A portrait of my friends Andrew and Hugue who run an amazing holiday let at Casale Monticchio in Umbria. I was thinking about figurative British painting in the sixties and seventies, and had got them to pose in the style of the American Collectors (Fred and Marcia Weisman) from 1968 by David Hockney.
Continue reading Andrew and HugueI had the idea that you could take a mould from a basket ball and use it to make indoor ceramic wall planters.

But you end up making vessels of one sort or another as thats whats pottery is about. This was the first big piece I made and is inspired by Eduardo Chillida.

Continue reading Modular plywood bookcaseSt Judes Year Six always puts on an end of year play. It’s a perfect way to celebrate the student finishing primary school, and makes a break from SATs. This year it was a musical Alice in Wonderland. My daughter volunteered me to help out with the scenery.
