Work can be effective and fun

‘Energized work exists to create useful change. By freeing people to make their own decisions. We do the remarkable.’
I first worked with Energized Work when they were contracted to AOL and the the founders Simon Baker and Gus Power had created a crew of developers working with an great combination of extreme programming and agile development. In 2004 agile deveopment was still a novel process
We kept in touch and I was lucky enough to join the crew in 2015 and work with them on a variety of projects. First at Pottermore and then at Ernst & Young. Simon was keen that they had some one on the crew to act as a bridge between their development culture and the design culture of their clients. I was keen to learn about the best practises of agile development. The crew were also totally committed to professional excellence and at the same time pretty eccentric, which often made for a lively office.
I believe the company was inspired by James Shores, ‘The art of Agile Programming‘
who says, in 99 words
‘Professionals do their best, most productive work when they’re energized and motivated. To achieve this, combine quality time away with focused attention while at work.
Go home on time every day. Spend time with family and friends and engage in activities that take your mind off of work. Eat healthy foods, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.
While at work, give it your full attention. Silence your phone and turn off interruptions like email and instant messaging.
Support energized work by providing a compelling vision and creating achievable plans. Shield team members from destructive organizational politics and useless meetings.’
Simon and Gus wound the crew down in 2019.
